Functional Appliances
These are devices designed to modify the growth of the jaw and improve how the upper and lower jaws fit together. They’re most effective for children and teens while their jaws are still growing. These appliances are custom-made for each patient and play an important role in achieving a healthy, functional, and well-aligned bite.
- Twin Block Appliance
- A removable appliance made of two parts (one for the upper jaw and one for the lower jaw) that helps correct overbites by encouraging the lower jaw to move forward.
- Herbst Appliance
- A fixed device that attaches to the molars and helps correct severe overbites by repositioning the lower jaw forward.
- Bionator or Activator Appliance
- Removable devices that reposition the jaw to improve jaw alignment and correct bite issues.
- Frankel Appliance
