Palate Expanders
Palate expansion and other arch development. Palate expansion and arch development treatments are orthodontic methods used to create more space in the mouth by widening the upper jaw or reshaping the dental arch. These treatments are particularly helpful for children and teens, but they can also benefit adults in some cases. These treatments aim to improve not only the alignment of teeth but also overall jaw function, breathing, and aesthetics. Your orthodontist will recommend the best approach based on the patient’s specific needs.
- Palate Expansion (Palatal Expanders)
- A palatal expander is a custom-made appliance that gently widens the upper jaw over time. It’s often used to:
- Correct a narrow palate.
- Create space for crowded teeth.
- Fix bite issues like crossbites.
The expander is attached to the upper teeth and gradually widened using a small key. Over time, the upper jaw expands, and the appliance is removed once the desired width is achieved. - Other Arch Development Options
- Fixed or Removable Expanders for Lower Arch:
- Appliances can be used to widen the lower dental arch and improve alignment or create space for teeth.
Myofunctional Appliances:- These are used to guide jaw growth and promote proper tongue and muscle function, which can help improve the shape of the dental arch. Examples include appliances like the Myobrace or Trainer systems.
Dental Arch Wires (Space Wideners):- Orthodontic wires and brackets can be designed to reshape the arch and gradually create space or correct alignment issues.
Orthodontic Aligners with Arch Expansion:- Invisalign or similar aligner systems can incorporate slight expansion over time to adjust the arch shape while straightening teeth.
